DJ Slinky (Joey Mason)

DJ Slinky (Joey Mason) - Tutor“When tutoring in the UK in some of the Burroughs with disadvantaged youth, I got such a buzz from seeing some of the kids eyes light up and sparkle when they finally found something they liked doing. With not many options in life left to them, it was great to see them initiate drive and determination to achieve skills in something again. Since being back in Australia, it has also been nice to teach advanced Cubase Sequencing software skills too, and watching basic users soak up the information and use it in their own projects!! Can’t wait to see how students at Byron College take to this DJ course.”.

Currently working on remixing and original production projects, Slinky has become a name synonymously associated with breakbeat. Crafting out a nifty career in this genre for the last 15 years, he has toured the globe playing at some of the biggest clubs, best festivals and coolest cities. From playing at GLADE festival 2008 UK in the Breaksday Tent, to Cairns 2009 Winter Solstice Festival Australia, Slinky’s other feats include playing Ministry of Sound (UK), Supercharged (UK), De Vloer (Holland,) Wink (India) to Space Base festival (Slovenia) and Reactor  (Sweden) for Sound of Habib Records.

Nationally Slinky has played The Big Day Out, Vibes on a Summers Day, SummerfieldDayze and was a crowd favorite and standout at Splendour in the Grass 2004/2005 and 2009. Slinky has supported almost everybody in the breakbeat fraternity, such as the likes of General MIDI, Drummatic Twins, Tayo, ILS, FreQnasty, Evil Nine, Adam Freeland, Stanton Warriors, & Krafty Kuts, Soul of Man, BLIM, Chris Carter & Deekline to name but a few. Competition wise Slinky came 2nd in the Quicksilver Air Show DJ contest, and Won the DJ contest for a slot at SummerfieldDayze.

In the public eye, slinky has featured on Radio shows in the US, UK and India.  Now his focus is on production, having signed his remix of The Groove Diggerz “Time Kontrol” to their UK label Breakin Even in 2008.  2009 saw Slinky with another release on Rapid Fire Records (Canada) called “The Darker Phaze” which he co-produced with Digitalis (Sinister/Matsuri).

2009 Splendour in the Grass Festival in Byron Bay watched Slinky play a 10PM peak set in the dance arena “Tipi Village” to a 3000+ strong crowd, representing breakbeat to the masses.

In between his residency at Liquid Nightclub, Radio slot on BAY-FM 99.9 and Remixing/Production projects, his time is held down by his hobby of free surfing and creating a future in music production teaching. Whilst living, DJing and producing in the UK (2006-2008) Slinky gained valuable experience tutoring troubled youth, helping them find drive by mentoring their development and encouraging them to achieve goals doing something they love. Since returning to Australia in 2008, Slinky has continued to teach private tuition of DJ and production skills to clients with the upmost professionalism and enthusiasm and looks forward to sharing his wealth of knowledge with Byron
