Assessments are made against units of competency from the course in SG00003802 - Skills Group SG00003802.

  • Participate in simple spoken interactions at work (FSKOCM03)
  • Use simple strategies for work-related learning (FSKLRG08)
  • Use strategies to respond to routine workplace problems (FSKLRG09)

Aged between 17 and 24 and wondering about your next steps? This program strikes a balance between exploring your big picture vision and learning real world skills in a wide range of areas, from land care to child care and IT to problem solving.

Run in collaboration with the Byron Shire Council, you’ll get a look behind the scenes at what it’s like to work for the dynamic and diverse organisation that keeps this unique community ticking. Through a great mix of individual, group and hands-on learning, you’ll also gain the skills you’ll need to successfully apply for apprenticeships and traineeships with Byron Shire Council or other organisations.

This program begins with 8 weeks of classroom study across a variety of areas, with a lot of hands on and creative content to keep things interesting. After that, you’ll do 2 days a week of work placement for 8 weeks, rotating through an eclectic mix of many areas of the Council’s day-to- day operations.

This may include work experience in: Childcare, Water Operations, Records Management, Customer Service, Community Enforcement or Facilities Management (Cavanbah Centre).

This will offer a great chance to see the world of options that can open when you ask, ‘what next’?

During this pre-employment program, you’ll learn the workplace skills to excel in many areas, such as:

  • Customer service
  • Conflict management
  • Digital technology
  • Online record keeping
  • Communication, teamwork and problem solving

Topics covered

The 5 units of competency from FSK10213 Certificate I in Skills for Vocational Pathways include:

  • FSKLRG08 – Use simple strategies for work-related learning
  • FSKDIG02 – Use digital technology for simple workplace tasks
  • FSKOCM03 – Participate in simple spoken interactions at work
  • FSKLRG09 – Use strategies to respond to routine workplace problems
  • FSKRDG07 – Read and respond to simple workplace information

Entry Requirements

  • No previous experience or knowledge is required
  • Students must be at least 17 years of age to enrol

Course Duration & Hours

  • Two days a week in class sessions: 10.00 am – 3.30pm
  • This course requires you to undertake work experience in the community and with the Council services. The College will assist you to arrange your work experience.
  • Held at the Mullumbimby Campus

Course Fees

  • Course is fully subsidised but students are required to pay an $80 resource fee

USI

From the 1st of January 2015, any student enrolling in an Accredited Training course will be required to obtain a USI. The USI helps to keep your training records and results together in an online account which is controlled by you. You can logon to the USI website and follow the simple instructions online to create your USI. This then needs to be provided to the College at the time of enrolment.

Important Information

Once your enrolment is completed you will receive a confirmation email. This email will be your receipt and inform you of the dates, time and venue of your course, it will also let you know of anything you need to take to class with you. Please make sure that you give us a valid email address and mobile number as any course changes will be communicated via sms or email.
