Student Story

Hopi Maku

As soon as I could talk I would ask for a pencil every morning, I couldn’t wait to follow my dream of art. I had been to a few of the colleges exhibitions and was drawn to study Visual Arts at Byron Community College because it is local and government accredited.

I found the tutors and staff at the college really supportive and have been exposed to comprehensive art subjects and techniques. Initially I found it challenging to speak to my peers and tutors in class, especially at the end of term presentations, however everyone has been so supportive that I can actually do this now. My confidence has increased by seeing that I can do the work required of me. Also being able to try a range of new styles and techniques that I wouldn’t have otherwise had the opportunity to give them a go has been rewarding.

For anyone considering the course I would say that you can pursue your pathway dreams locally and everyone is very helpful to your particular dreams. The best thing to do is just come into the college and talk to the staff, look around the facilities and then it’s easy to work out your own way to learn what you want and move forward with your life.
