Complementary Colours

Expand your knowledge of colour by learning how to use complementary colours to great effect. Understand how this dynamic colour scheme is so important when working with your colour palette. Learn how to recognise and use complements when mixing colour, under painting or glazing colour over colour. Working with the medium of gouache (opaque watercolour), we will produce a series of colour studies to take home as a valuable reference for future artworks.

Experience is gained through practical hands on sessions using coloured paper and paint, with plenty of visual examples to inspire you. This workshop is open to anyone interested in colour and applicable to any medium.


There will be exercises and demonstrations throughout the day. We will cover:

  • what are complementary colours- discussion
  • how to organize a palette
  • mixing paint with complementary colours
  • painting simple colour studies

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the day you will:

  • understand a complementary colour scheme
  • recognise a complementary colour scheme in the work of other artists
  • understand value, intensity, temperature and proportion in relation to complementary colours.
  • how to use this colour scheme in glazing, underpainting.

What to bring

  • $12 to pay to tutor for paint
  • Rag to clean hands
  • Container for water for cleaning brushes (yoghurt container, jam jar etc)
  • Water spray bottle (one that sprays a fine mist)
  • Optional…..Apron or painting shirt, own set of brushes
  • Mug
  • Please bring your own lunch
