Plaiting is a unique tradition of Australian bushcraft which utilises leather and fibres such as grasses, linen and nylon.
Demonstrations include using a fid, splitter, lacing device and traditional thumbnail method of cutting out leather. Maintenance and preservation of artefacts. Tutor’s own examples of plaiting and a brief history of leather plaiting with an Introduction to Australian Plaiters and Whipmakers Association Journal. Additional materials $40

You will Learn:

  • An understanding of a unique and traditional Australian practice of plaiting using leather such as kangaroo hide and other fibres such as grasses, linen or nylon.
  • Preparations for plaiting and completing in a practical or highly decorative design ranging from jewellery to practical applications such as dog leads, belts, hatbands, and whips in single or two-tone colour.
  • Learn 4, 8 and 12 plait, Turk’s heads and decorative cover knots, hitches and fastenings, cutting out strands, learning how to cut out leather and other natural materials.
  • To produce work with a unique and highly artistic outcome and with a high level of discipline and dexterity.
  • Practise using leatherworking tools such as knives, fids, needles and splitters and lacing devices.
  • Leather maintenance and preservation of artefacts.

What to bring

  • Snap off blade retractable knife, ie Stanley or box cutter
  • Wooden cutting board
  • $40 to pay tutor for materials
