Draw inspiration from nature whilst learning the fundamental skills of drawing. The focus will mostly be on observing and drawing natural objects brought into the studio, with the occasional use of reference photographs. Participants will be shown a range of pencil techniques and encouraged to experiment with graphite pencils, combined with watercolour, to create interesting effects. This is a wonderful opportunity to take the time to investigate the incredible diversity of forms and textures of the natural world. This course is suitable for beginners and more experienced students as each person will be attended to individually.

The tutor will bring a folio of her own drawings and art books to illustrate a wide range of drawing styles.

  • Introduction to a full range of graphite drawing media, plus watercolour.
  • Fundamental skills of observing and drawing light/dark, positive and negative space, contours, proportion
  • Introduction to various drawing techniques.

By the end of the course you will have:

  • Practical experience of different ways to approach drawing.
  • How to observe subject matter accurately, and in turn draw what is seen.
  • Insights into the way artists see and draw their subjects.
  • Explored ways to be creative with your approach to materials and drawing
  • Experienced the art of slowing down and shifting into right brain mode.

What to bring

PLease bring the following to the first class. There will be additional materials to bring to following classes, this will be discused in the first session.

  • A set of graphite pencils…..at least a 4B and 6B and 8B pencil( Mars Lumograph or Bruynzeel pencils are recommended)
  • 10 sheets of A4 paper, can be recycled paper, one side must be blank.
  • A selection of natural objects….bring at least three.
  • Kneadable eraser – Faber Castell are a good one
  • Vinyl eraser (this is the standard eraser most of us use)
  • Note book and pen
  • Rag to clean hands
  • Mug
  • Please bring your own lunch
  • $10 to pay tutor
