This course has no current classes. Please the waiting list.

Paint a convincing likeness of a face by learning the basic skills of painting tonally. Starting with an A4 sized black and white photocopy of a face, you will be guided through each stage until completion. The faces you choose could be a family member, friend, self portrait, or select from the folio of faces that the tutor has collected. We will work with gouache (opaque watercolour) onto paper. Suitable for complete beginners or those with some experience. $10 Materials fee.

• Introduction to value and the monochromatic colour scheme
• Working from photos versus real life subjects.
• How to systematically paint basic shapes to build up the structure of the portrait.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the day you will have:
• Practical experience of different ways to apply paint.
• Insight into which brushes and art tools are useful .
• Learnt how to build up a portrait, working from the basic shapes to fine details.
• Insights into the way artists see and paint their subjects.
• A brief understanding of the monochromatic colour scheme.

What to bring

  • A palette (can be as simple as a white, plastic oval barbeque plate)The tutor recommends this palette set up: An A4 clear, 2.5cm deep office file with a couple of A4 sheets of acetate placed inside. This file is great as the lid can be snapped shut and the paints don’t dry out as easily. (Dolphin office Choice in Mullumbimby has them)
  • Water container (old yoghurt tub or jar etc.)
  • Spray water bottle (one that sprays a fine mist)
  • Rag to wipe hands
  • Your own mug for tea
  • Lunch and refreshments
  • $10 materials fee

  • Participants can bring A4 sized black and white photocopies of a face. It can be your own, a friend, family member or one from a magazine. Make sure that the photocopy is not too dark or too light and that the face, hair and neck takes up most of the page (the photo may have to be enlarged ). Enlarging the face to A3 size is also fine.
  • Apron or painting shirt
